How do you hand rear a peach-faced lovebird?
Tomorrow I'm getting a baby peach-faced lovebird that isn't out of the nest yet (about 1 wk to go). It needs to be hand reared and I don't know too much about han rearing a lovebird.
I need to know what to feed it and where to get it?
I also need to know if it needs to go into a little box, or something similar, before it's ready to go into a cage?
Help please! Any tips would be very helpful! XD
Also, how often should I feed them?
First off go to you tube and start watching hand feeding videos. This is by no means a substitute for having an experienced person teach you but it will at least give you an idea of what you are getting into.
Secondly whoever is selling you this bird should make darn sure to show you how to feed the bird BEFORE you leave. They should also be able to tell you what kind of hand-feeding formula it has been eating, where to get it, how often baby has been eating and how much it as been eating. They should also be able to at minimum tell you what kinds of food it is being weaned onto. You want to stick with the same weaning food and formula to minimize the stress to the baby.
It should have somewhere draft free to be when in its cage (a tissue box and some paper towel will work if nothing else) and it should be in a real bird cage by this point as it is able to fly and can get hurt if not contained. I would also recommend weighing the baby daily to make sure that it is getting enough to eat as moving is stressful. A simple gram scale will work for this and can really mean life or death for the baby.
