Level-crossing style gates across the A9 in Scotland? and red and white poles at the side of the road?
The recent snow in England reminded me of a trip I did to Inverness last fall. There were a number of what looked like level-crossing gates at various points (but no railway tracks across the road) and a series of red & white poles alongside the road. My guide mentioned they were necessary in winter when it snowed. Please explain!
Scotland, unlike its moaning neighbours to the south, gets snow nearly every year. (You never hear about it in the news, because we can cope with the stuff!)
The gates are snow gates. When the snow gets too deep for travel, the Police shut the gates across the A9 and padlock them to prevent traffic using the road.
The poles are snow poles and they serve two functions. First they are a guide for snow ploughs to clear away the snow drifts from the road surface. Secondly, in cases of deep drifts, they are a guide for rescuers to probe down through the snow for buried vehicles.
Snow poles are commonplace in Scotland. Snow gates are also installed on some other main roads in Scotland - I recall seeing a set at Carter Bar on the A68 on the Scottish side of the border with England.
